Nothing controversial to me about that one, but I knew a number of people in the Nashville music scene who had convinced themselves that luck was a major factor in making it (if not everything). I came to wonder if thinking so was a coping mechanism to deal with the heartbreak of having never “made it” (back in the day when people thought there was really only one way to “make it”; times sure have changed!)
Anyway, I don’t deny the existence of “fortune”, good or bad; but it doesn’t hold the same power as the main determinants, i.e. learning, hard work, and attitude. So I agree, marketing is a craft.
t’s a humorous metaphor, but comes from a worldview where, in my opinion, chance (luck) is given way too big a role. There’s more science to this thing than we sometimes like to admit to ourselves, and less dice rolls.
