OK, this falls into the “very big news” category - Epic have just announced that the Unreal Engine is now free to use for indie developers - presumably including Machinima creators. That’s very big indeed, since it’s been used for commercial Machinima already.

Anyone know how much modding the engine requires before it’s Machinima-ready, if any?

Kate - it’s not a new idea. Strange Company did the Machinima production work for an Electronic Arts game back in 2001 (never got released, sadly) and I’ve been approached about similar things several times. Hopefully will start to happen more.

CD - there are ways around the cost of Maya and similar things - I may do a post on this. Also, I heartily recommend, as always, recruiting people who have the skills you need.

I’ll be very interested to hear what you find out about the USK.

I’ve not yet looked at the UDK, but the Editor that was released with UT3 or Gears of War was machinima ready. Problem might be the missing assets to start with. That was a problem with those editors before since they ddidn’t allow facial animation for the preset characters. You had to build and rig your won characters and faces to use FaeFX and that needs tools like Maya or 3dmax and a lot of additional knowledge. I’ll have a look at USK to get a better impression what is released with it soon.
I’m not exactly sure if that license includes machinima. I hope there will be
a similar one for machinima.

Wow, this is great news on so many levels. I have loved the clarity of render on UT produced machinima, but the combination of learning curve and unreachable license fees for commercial work have just led me to dismiss this engine. I can’t help thinking others will have thought the same way.
Another aspect is the possibility for a greater variety of quality games becoming available (I guess you noticed the new Unity deal as well?)
The games industry is mostly caught in the ‘shoot ‘em up’ trap of having to produce games in only the big bucks genres due to cost of development.
Any interesting indie produced games seem to be artistically produced enhanced 2d (I haven’t searched far, let me know what I’m missing)
I can’t help thinking that at some point the machinima world, and game development world may recombine in some way…can you imagine indie machinimators making cut-scenes for indie game developers?
